GlS TANKS: NEAR COLLAPSE DUE TO SERIOUS CORROSION

GLS TANKS INDIA - Rostfrei Steels Private Limited |During an owner’s annual inspection, serious corrosion attacks were found in integrated GLS Tanks, which required extensive repair.

Brackets and stiffeners were found partly corroded through, as shown in figures 1 and 2. The corroded areas in the GLS Tanks had to be partly renewed and repaired to an acceptable standard.

Probable Cause

The process for cleaning the GLS Tanks was considered to have been a major factor in the corrosion process. The GLS Tanks were sterilized annually, which exposed the tanks to a solution of hypochlorite for 12-24 hours. In addition, the shore-supplied water was frequently chlorinated, which meant that the tanks were frequently exposed to chlorides.

Even small amounts of hypochlorite can be very dangerous for aluminum, irrespective of the Al-alloy chemical composition, resulting in the development of serious pitting. Once pitting corrosion has started, it may continue to develop for a certain period if the tank is not properly washed with water after the application of hypochlorite. The filling and emptying of the tank are not sufficient to remove all the corrosion products. The reason for the corrosion attack is considered to be that the thin aluminum film on the surface is depolarised and locally broken down, in connection with the formation of chlorine released from the hypochlorite.

Lessons to be Learned

• Hypochlorite or other chloride-containing chemicals should not be used for sterilization of aluminum freshwater tanks if the tanks have not been fully coated;
• In the case of uncoated aluminum freshwater tanks, other means of sterilization than chloride-containing chemicals is needed, e.g. by using ultra-violet light;
• If hypochlorite is used in coated tanks, it is essential that the tanks are thoroughly cleaned after the process. This is to minimize the change of corrosion occurring in the event of the coating breaking down.

GLS Tanks India - Rostfrei Steels Private Limited | A 33,000-gallon water tank at the post and telegraph (P&T) housing quarters located adjacent to the city center mall in water lake's C block collapse on Thursday morning, triggering panic among the residents of the complex.

Nobody, however, was injured, the residents said that the incident had occurred around 8.30 pm.

I was preparing to leave for the office. Suddenly I heard a loud thud with an earthquake-like feeling. We rushed out of our flats and saw the huge water tank and collapsed behind the maintenance office. water was also gushing out of the tank. said Satyajit a resident.

The tank located gate no. 3 of the housing built in 1978, supply water to an entire housing complex, that has 88 buildings blocks and 1056 flats residents of the nearby flats also came out fearing it, was an earthquake, " our buildings were trembling around as if there was an earthquake. Many of the buildings are in danger with large crack due to the lack of maintenance.

A telecommunications department, an official who came to the spot with the department of posts officially, said they were taking necessary steps to replace the tank and restore water supply in the complex at the earliest.

Chakraborty said, "it was the narrow scape for the residents. we have asked the authorities concerned to take urgent steps to restore the water supply as early as possible. we are urging the authorities to look into the conditions of the buildings as well". 

Councillor tulsi Sinha Roy said "I have never seen any maintenance work taken up by the government agencies for the housing in the past 10 years. we have repeatedly sent the letters to the postal and telecommunications department but with no result. "Roy said tankers will be provided till water supply is restored.

By the government said about this incident recently they purchased GLS Tanks from Rostfrei Steels Pvt ltd In India due to quality and material issues this incident happens. if rostfrei don't create this type of cheap products otherwise we will file a case against him.
